My discovery of the Teachers Pay Teachers website a couple of years ago has been a very fortunate discovery. Although I create numerous lesson materials for my classes, I also use this website to find lesson materials that are useful for the novels, grammar, reading skills or writing skills that I am teaching. There’s a large number of listings on the site that are free because every TPT seller must post a free item to show the quality of his/her work. It’s to the seller’s advantage to provide an item that is high quality since the person downloading it for free may decide to follow the listings of that seller as a result.
I realize that there are numerous educators online that are providing their content for free. I’ll admit, I don’t completely understand it. I believe in helping and offering content of value to others; however, I also think that buying a great lesson from another teacher is supportive to their efforts. I don’t at all mind buying great lesson materials if someone else has put work and effort into the final product that is going to make my life easier.
Why should all the money for lesson materials in education go to the big companies that produce textbooks for a high price? Why shouldn’t a teacher who strives to meet the needs of his/her students, be rewarded for their efforts?
I am definitely a fan of this site.
I’ve been telling myself for a long time that I was going to start listing some of the assignments and handouts that I have made for my classes. Yesterday, I finally posted my first free offering and today I listed my first item for sale. In less than 24 hours, the free offering has been viewed 27 times and downloaded 5 times. The item I listed for sale has not yet been purchased, but it has been viewed a few times in under the first hour.
I’m going to see how it goes as a free membership seller where you make 60% royalties as profit. Those who subscribe to a paid membership for $59.95US per year get some extra perks which include 85% royalties on products sold.
Visit Teachers Pay Teachers to see what you have been missing! Become a member and start selling too! It’s a great opportunity to get a little kick-back for the work that you have completed and you help out other educators who are in need of lesson materials.
